Dance is a natural aspect of human nature. Most people dance to express happiness or to release/ build on energy. Dancing is universal activity that most cultures indulge in for various purposes- like rituals and celebrations. Individuals can dance alone or in groups, in public or in private. The art of dance is a beautifully natural way of expressing emotion and interpreting sound via movement. Dance is simple to do and still so complex in the how and why. During COVID-19, many people can’t socialize and enjoy life in the ways we used to. Since dance is such a flexible activity, it’s important to remember what dancing can do for an individual or community. In a time where social distancing disrupts our ability to connect with each other, virtual dancing can help individuals to experience one another in silly and authentic ways. To understand the cultural and emotional aspect and benefits of dance, I asked my community to explain what dancing means to them.
